Canadian Makes Polo History

According to The London Free Press, Fred Mannix Jr. has become the first Canadian ever to qualify for the prestegious Argentine Open. Fred willl be playing with Alegria Park Hyatt, a multinational team that includes Luke Tomlinson (UK), Jack Baileu (Australlia) and Pancho Bensadon (Argentina). APH held on to beat Miramar by two points Friday to win a qualifying tournament and advance to the Abierto which runs November 18th to December 9th at Palermo, Buenos Aires.

Polo Match Promotes Breeders' Cup Races

About an hour south of New York City is Colts Neck, NJ (pop. 12,331). A polo match was held there last Sunday, Oct. 14th, to raise money for the ReRun Adopt a Thoroughbred organization and promote the 2007 Breeders' Cup which will be held later this week, October 26-27, at nearby Monmoth Park.

According to the Asbury Park Press, the match was "a smashing success, drawing more than 600 people and raising at least $30,000". The match, part of the Breeders Cup Fan Fest, was brought about by the combined efforts of the Colts Neck Charitable Polo Club and the Oceanport Sports Foundation. Well done!

Equine Flu Grips Australia

Equine influenza has forced the cancellation or rescheduling of a wide variety of equestrian events in Australia. The outbreak started in New South Wales and was confirmed on August 24, 2007.

Australia has restricted horse movement. Anyone who move horses without permission during the current suspected equine influenza will suffer harsh penalties including a fine of up to $44,000 and up to a year in imprison.

The best source of information is the NWS Department of Primary Industries.

This is my first post in over a year. My how time flies.

I just got too busy to do this last year, so I had to let it go. But now I'm going to set aside some time each day to let you know what's going on in the world of polo.

On May 12, 2007 a USA vs. England polo match will take place in Leesburg, Virginia. The Americas Cup of Polo is part of the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia. The England team will be patroned by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales.

The site of The Americas Cup of Polo will be Morven Park, the historic estate of Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis (1918-1922). Morven Park is located near Washington, DC.

Gulf Stream Polo Sold to Developers

The historic Gulfstream Polo Club, in Lake Worth, Florida (USA) has been sold to developers who received approval last week from Palm Beach County commissioners to build 866 homes on their property.

According to the Palm Beach Post, the club was sold for a whopping $301,150 per-acre!

According to the Telegraph.co.uk the Brits are having their "most troubled season ever." The "awful events" sited include the following:

Catherine Yates, the treasurer of Cambridge University's polo club, died from injuries she received playing Pony Club polo on August 3rd.
Bryan Morrison, the former manager of rock band Pink Floyd, is in a coma from injuries he received playing chukkers in July.
Swiss financier Urs Schwarzenbach broke some ribs in June.
Later in June, Luke Tomlinson broke his pelvis.
Members of the HPA lost their liability coverage because Howard Hipwood was forced to settle a ridiculous personal injury lawsuit for £5 million.
British pros are pissed off at Argentine pros for taking "their" jobs.

Ms. Yates' death is only the second polo fatality in England since WWII. An investigation is underway.

Chile Tied with South Africa

According to News24.com, Chile managed to tie South Africa 9-9 in The BMW International Polo Series. The 22-24 goal tournament consists of two Test matches. The first match was played yesterday at Shongweni, near Durban and the second will be held at the Inanda Club in Sandton next Sunday.

South Africa is undefeated against Chile and they had the home team advantage yesterday; nevertheless, the Chileans came into their own in the last two chukkas, adapting to the local conditions/horses and tied it up within "a heartbeat" of the final whistle.

The top scorer for Chile was Juan-Eduardo Jaramillo (6) who racked up five goals. The team's number two man, Jose-Rafael "Cote" Zegers, and their back, Matias Vial, each got in a couple of goals.

Bryan Hein scored six goals for SA with Rory Bryden scoring two and team captain Selby Williams scoring once.

Tickets for next Sunday's match in Sandton are available from the South African Polo Association.

Operation Polo Returns to India

According to THE HINDU, The IPA (Indian Polo Association, not to be confused with India Pale Ale) may receive 20 acres of land from the state government to build a "full-fledged [polo] facility in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad is that big city in India where your computer manufacturer's help desk is probably located. It's a metropolitan area of about 6.6 million people with companies like Microsoft, HP, Oracle, GE Capitol, etc. It's also a place where there were 22 polo fields at one time.

The new polo facility is intended to accommodate the 2007 World Military Games.

Youth Polo Festival in Pennsylvania

About 36 kids ranging from 10 to 17 years of age from all over the U.S. and Canada competed in a polo tournament at Brandywine Polo Club in Kennet Square, Pennsylvania last weekend July 28th-July 30th.

The "Polofest" event was conducted jointly by Brandywine Youth Polo and Work To Ride. Brandywine Youth Polo is a nonprofit polo school that offers free arena polo lessons to young riders (ages 11-17) at the Brandywine Polo Club. Work to Ride is a non-profit program in Philadelphia that aids disadvantaged youth through a variety of horseback riding activities.

The Polofest included workshops on equine maintenance and lectures on equine care and health, in addition to a regular tournament for kids.

Women's International Polo in Iran

Now, THIS is interesting..

According to the BBC News, Iran has been holding its first international women's polo tournament this week, with teams from Britain and Australia taking on the hosts.

Following Iran's Islamic Revolution of 1979, women were barred from playing polo "in public" until last year. And this is the first time--according to the BBC--Iranian women have competed in an international tournament.

"The significance of today's game is to find out what level our country's polo is at and to progress; to see and learn from their playing," said player Haleh Amirebrahimi.

Polo competitions in Iran are limited to single-sex matches. And the women - including the visiting players - must observe Islamic traditions in clothing. The women players wear headscarves under their helmets and long jackets.

Seems like it would be hot to me, but the players say they don't mind.

International Polo in Great Britain

This Sunday, July 30th, 2006, is Cartier International Day at the Guards Polo Clubin England. In the main event, England will compete against New Zealand in the historic Coronation Cup. This annual event, now in its 22nd year, is attended by over 25,000 people and is the highlight of the polo and social calendar. The games will be played on the Smith Lawns in Windsor Great Park.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will once again be in attendance to watch the game and present the winning team with the coveted trophy.

The Coronation Cup teams are as follows: New Zealand: Simon Keyte, Cody Forsyth, JP Clarkin, and Tommy Wilson. The reserve is Craig Wilson, Coach Glen Gilmore from Australia, and manager Roddy Wood. England: James Biem, Mark Tomlinson, Henry Brett, Luke Tomlinson. Coach John Horswell, and manager Andrew Tucker.

This will be the fourth time that these two nations have met in this competition and the score currently stands at 2-1 to England. The Coronation Cup was first contested as an International Match in 1951 and 1953 and yearly since 1971.

Gibson Guitar is the main sponsor of the New Zealand polo team. The American-based guitar company has sponsored the winning, visiting teams (Chile and Australia) for the last two Cartier International events.

The morning match, for the Golden Jubilee Trophy, features a Hurlingham team in action against a Prince of Wales four. HRH Prince Harry has been a crucial member of the latter team for the past three years.

Santa Barbara, California

According to The Acorn, Ambassador Glen Holden (left) and his wife, Gloria, are joined by Pat and George Spears at the 23rd annual Golden Mallet Invitational Polo Tournament at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club in Carpinteria, California.

The event raised money for the Learning Center for Young Children, one of eight community services operated by the Assistance League of Southern California.

Black Bears Take Gold Cup

Black Bears beat Ellerston White 9-8 Sunday in the finals of the 22-goal Veueve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

CNN International did a story on the tournament yesterday calling the Gold Cup "Polo for the masses" yet they said the starting price for a polo pony is $90,000.

You Think You've Got it Bad

Are the folks at the office competing for your time on the polo field? I sympathize entirely if they are, but trust me you're not the only one.

Take the case of James packer, son of the late great Kerry Packer. He's scheduled to play this Wednesday in the 20-22 goal Veueve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club. But the guys back at the office are bugging him to come home to Australia to sort out a squabble at one of his businesses, television network Channel Nine.

Mr Packer is rightly refusing to return home to umpire a management dispute. His has more important things to do. Play POLO!

For those of you lucky enough to be headed to Hawaii anytime soon, the beautiful Kaua‘i Polo Club starts its polo season tomorrow afternoon. The local news paper did a nice little puff piece to promote the club.

The article is mostly about grooms, but it also mentions a few of the club's players including Stuart Mckenzie, Ronnie Tongg, Ron Bonaguidi, Krista Bonaguidi, and Scott Sims.

A new 500 acre equestrian development is in the works for Wellington, Florida according to the Palm Beach Daily News. It is being planned around the Winter Equestrian Festival by a group of Wellington residents that includes Gene Mische, of Stadium Jumping, Inc.

The proposed development will have "condos, equestrian homes, an RV village, studio-type grooms' quarters, 2,000 permanent stalls, a hotel/spa, medical facility, restaurants and shopping."

A recently announced restaurant -- a spin off of the famous Tavern on the Green in New York -- will eventually be the anchor of a retail shopping area in the new development. Initially, the restaurant will be located in what has been known as Gallipette restaurant, which overlooks the International Arena at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club.

The new restaurant opens in November, just in time for the National Horse Show and POLO SEASON.

Thank God the Royals are still playing polo. Otherwise, our sport would get zero publicity.

Prince Harry played yesterday in Berkshire, England. The match was a fundraiser for Aids orphans in Africa and reportedly raised £30,000.

But the real news, according to MonstorsandCritics.com, was Prince Harry's girlfriend.

"South African beauty, Chelsy Davy, was wearing a tight white halter-neck top and a layered floral skirt, as she watched her royal boyfriend play in a charity game."

Brunei Gets Ready to Party

If you think you know how to party, you ain't seen nothin' 'til you been to Brunei. The tiny oil-rich country on Borneo island is gearing up for its biggest shindig in years, marking Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's 60th birthday on July 15th. The party starts this weekend and goes pretty much nonstop until the 15th.

According to the Associated Press, Hassanal can be a tad extravagant.

"He has a vast collection of Rolls-Royces and Ferraris, along [with] personal planes. While playing polo with Britain's Prince Charles, the sultan once had his polo [boots] delivered --by helicopter-- to the palace field." (AP)

Kentucky Horse Park Needs Help

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is seeking funds to prepare for the Alltech FEI Games Kentucky 2010. Despite having built a new all-weather show facility, the horse park is "far from ready" for the event according to a KHP Foundation press release.

The Triple Crown of Polo

The Las Colinas Polo Club in Dallas got some ink in our local newspaper last week. The second leg of the The Triple Crown of Polo was there this weekend. The three-part event started here at Sarasota Polo Club in March and was broadcast by ESPN2.

Since, Yasmin and I are stuck in Florida this summer, I asked Robin Uhilien if I could use his new arena at the Sarasota Polo Club (SPC) to teach some polo. He and club manager Maggie Mitchell were kind enough to offer me the arena and some stalls for my horses.

We moved our horses from our property on Verna Road to barn "B" at the Sarasota Polo Club (SPC) this week. I now get to feed my own horses since I live so close to the club. What a treat!

Polo lessons will start on Saturday, July 8th. We'll be playing at 7:30 A.M. to beat the heat.

The new arena at SPC is nice. I'm looking forward to using it!
